Georgia College has recently published a revealing look at Flannery O’Connor’s younger days, when she attended the school (then called Georgia State College for Women). The book is a collection of cartoons O’Connor drew during her time as a student there. Many of them appeared in the college’s yearbook, student newspaper and literary journal.
Bruce Gentry, editor of the new book, says the cartoons depict various aspects of student life and are reminiscent of the satirical cartoons that appear in publications like The New Yorker. He says that these cartoons reveal an unexpected positive side to an author known primarily for being mean-spirited.
