Each year, the Writing University conducts interviews with writers while they are in Iowa City participating in the International Writing Program's fall residency. We sit down with authors to ask about their work, their process and their descriptions of home. Today we are talking with ZHANG Chu 张楚 , a novelist from People's Republic of China (PRC).

1. Do you have a plan or project in mind for your time at the residency?

I've just released my first novel, Cloud Falling. During my residency in Iowa, I plan to refine my writing style and craft a series of short stories set in the countryside. While contemporary attention often centers on urban life, I want to explore and illuminate the hidden narratives and solitary lives in rural settings.

2. What does your daily practice look like for your writing? Do you have a certain time when you write? Any specific routine?

I don't follow a strict daily writing schedule, but I make it a point to read every day. My writing ideas often simmer for extended periods—sometimes months, sometimes years—before I feel ready to dive in. When the moment is right, I write swiftly. I prefer writing at night, in the quiet, which allows for a deeper connection with my thoughts. I usually close the curtains and keep a cigarette at hand while I work.

3. What are you currently reading right now? Are you reading for research or pleasure?

I'm currently reading William Faulkner’s Light in August. I reread this book every August or September, as part of a personal ritual to welcome autumn. I’ve lost count of how many times I've read it. My reading is mostly for research purposes, though for relaxation, I enjoy watching entertaining movies.

4. What is something the readers and writers of Iowa City should know about you and/or your work?

Cloud Falling is a novel I hold dear, and I am eager for it to be translated into English and shared with a broader audience. I hope it will resonate with readers and writers in Iowa City.

5. Tell us a bit about where you are from -- what are some favorite details you would like to share about your home?

I’m from Tianjin, China, a major northern city with a population of 13 million. It stands out as the only ancient city with a precise historical record of its founding, dating back 620 years. Known for its humor and the open-minded, optimistic nature of its residents, Tianjin is famous for its crosstalk performances. The city's vibrant and positive atmosphere provides a rich backdrop for my writings.
